One of the many talented actresses in Bollywood, Urmila Matondkar, is know to ace in every psychological role given to her. She has made a place for her own in that genre and won accolades or the same from critics and audience alike.
Daughter of a lecturer, Urmila Matondkar was born on 4th February 1974. She started her career as a child artist in the film Kalyug in the year 1980. But she is best known for her role as a child artist in the 1983 film, Masoom wherein her acting was highly appreciated by people amongst the industry. She subsequently appeared in a number of films as a kid.
Years later, in 1991, Urmila made her debut as an actress in the film Narasimha opposite Sunny Deol in the year 1991. The next two years she did movies like Chamatkar opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Shreemaan Aashique opposite Anupam Kher and Rishi Kapoor and a crime movie Drohi but somehow none of them worked wonders. She was always way behind her competitors Manisha Koirala and Raveena Tandon who reached the peak of their popularity with blockbuster after blockbuster.
Success came much later to her with the entry of her mentor Ram Gopal Verma. In the year 1995, Urmila did Ram Gopal Verma's Rangeela, wherein she gave a splendid performance alongside actors Aamir Khan and Jackie Shroff. She modernized sensuality on the Indian screen something that most actresses hadn't managed even after a dozen hits.
She stills maintains to be one of the names frequently used by media as sex symbol of Bollywood. Subsequent to Rangeela, her career graph took an upwards turn and she managed to give successful films at regular intervals. Her films like Satya, Judaai,
Aflatoon, Jungle and several more did well at the box office.
Eventually what became her forte in the industry was her ability to pull off complex and mentally challenged characters. She could easily judge the extremity of the role she would play, and adapt herself into it easily. Audience could relate, accept and believe in the characters she portrayed.
Some of her memorable performances in that genre were as a psychopath in Kaun, an obsessive lover in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, a ghost-possessed woman in Bhoot and a merciless avenger in Ek Hasina Thi. Her performance in Bhoot, won her, her first Filmfare Award in the Best Actress (Critics) category, as well as several other awards for Best actress at a number of award ceremonies.
Even after gaining success and recognition, Urmila did not restrict herself to mainstream cinema only. She understood her capabilities and extended herself to off-beat movies like, Tehzeeb, Pinjar, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and Bas Ek Pal.
Apart from her acting talent, she was also appreciated for her dancing skills. Her graceful and sensuous moves gave her a few successful item numbers as well.
In the year 2008, Urmila featured in Himesh Reshammiya’s Karzzzz (a remake of the 1980 film Karz). The film flopped miserably and so did EMI, which released a month later. The sexy and petite actress has been out of action ever since then. But she is soon to be seen on screen in the movie, Non Stop Fun and Bhoot 2. She will also mark her debut on Indian television as a host of a reality show named Waar Parriwar.
Urmila has successfully managed to keep her personal life under wraps. Media has not been able to encroach into her personal territory, which becomes the reason for her being away from controversies. Apart from her linkup with mentor Ram Gopal Verma, she has never been in the spotlight for other issues.
