One look at the colourful, exuberant and youthful promo of Zoya Akhtar’s upcoming film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and one knows that high expectations can be kept with the music of the film, especially when it has been scored by music composer trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who are known for their distinctive style and likeable melodies. As expected, the film brings forth simple, entertaining and hummable tracks.
Shankar Mahadevan, Suraj Jagan and Joi Barua open the album with Dil dhadakne do, an entertaining, foot-tapping and pleasing song that brings alive the feel and theme of the film effectively. Talking about the importance of living life to the fullest, the song finds connect with the listener and is instantly likeable. No qualms in saying that this is indeed one of the best songs of the album.
After a great song, the next track Ik junoon (Paint it red) is not so impressive. Sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Vishal Dadlani, Ehsaan Noorani, Alyssa Mendonsa and Gulraj Singh, this fast-paced number that has an amalgamation of English and Hindi lyrics, fails to strike a chord with the listener. It also has a remixed version, but even that doesn’t add a lot to the track.
However, the next song Khabon ke parindey does damage control and brings to the table a raw, fresh hummable love ballad, crooned by Alyssa Mendonsa and Mohit Chauhan, who is heard only after the first two and a half minutes of the song. Although it is an all and all Alyssa song, Mohit turns the attention
to his silken vocals, even though he makes a brief presence.
Senorita, the most hyped song of the film owing to the fact that it has been sung by actors like Abhay Deol, Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar with ample support from Spanish singer Maria Del Mar Fernandez, spells fun and is truly enjoyable. The actors have done a great job with the vocals and have made this dance number truly catchy, lively and energetic. Senorita, also has a remixed version, which is faster in pace.
Der lagi lekinby Shankar again turns the flow of the album and is simple song that picks pace towards the end. It doesn’t boast of a strong orchestration and that works well with the mood of the song that is pensive and not over the top.
Sooraj ki baahon mein that has been voiced by Loy Mendonsa, Dominique Cerejo and Clinton Cerejo is a fast-paced track that is likeable from the word go. It is sung in an interesting way and the infectious rhythm makes it worth a hear.
The album concludes with a philosophical narration by Farhan Akhtar. The monologue called “Toh zinda ho tum” is not very long and has dim music in the background.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have churned out a decent score, which has the potential of climbing the popularity charts with time. In the time and age when most composers are experimenting and borrowing influences from other cultures and newer tastes, SEL stuck to it’s style and yet brought out an interesting soundtrack.
